The Biby Wilderness Trail

Have you ever wondered what it must’ve been like back in the 1930s, when the Appalachian Trail was created? Work on the Tuscarora evokes that effort, allowing you to transcend time and share a common experience.

We’re constructing an access trail to the Tuscarora Trail north of The Pinnacle and south of Gore, VA in the Shawneeland Resort development.

Richard Biby has supported the Tuscarora (formerly The Big Blue) Trail for years. When he served the Shawneeland Resort Homeowners Association, he helped negotiate the easements granted by landowners allowing that trail to cross their properties enroute Gore. Recently, Mr. Biby donated his tract in Shawneeland to PATC. Our Club plans to build a public trailhead parking area there as well as the Biby Wilderness Access Trail to the Tuscarora Trail.

• The pay is substandard
• The work is physical and has been known to be tiring
• Overnight accommodations used will never be rated (or acknowledged) by Michelin

On the other hand, there’s the romance of the Tuscarora Trail. This trail is not a federal- or a state-supported project. It’s the brainchild of PATC members of PATC and the Keystone Trails Association. It exists, or co-exists, with private landholdings by virtue of the skills and integrity of those who negotiate the necessary right–of–way easements and by those who build and maintain it.

Who Works on This Project?

• Anyone can help build the Biby Wilderness Access Trail.
• You must be able to hike in to the work area carrying tools.
• Families, including minor children are welcome.
• Canine companions are welcome, too.

Working with us on this project is a great opportunity for youth who need service project hours!
