The Tuscarora Trail Management Plan

The Tuscarora Trail Management Plan is a cooperative agreement between private and public land owners to establish and maintain governance of the Tuscarora Trail to protect the interests of the land owners and to preserve the trail for the public.

Conditions may have changed since this Management Plan was published.

Information on Tuscarora Trail corridor lands protected by partners or by the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club through easement, purchase, or lease is provided from North to South. Further information on PATC-protected lands is contained in the appropriate land record files for the Tuscarora Trail at its headquarters in Vienna, Virginia. (See Appendix E. Trailheads and Parking, for further information on access to the Tuscarora Trail.) Trail miles are contained on the referenced map elevation profiles.

The Trail is within or near the state forest from mile 19.8 to 48.5.

Cowans Gap PATC Tract, mile 11.8

54 acres purchased 2004 to protect trail and provide for construction of Silberman Cabin. Includes South Branch Little Aughwick Creek. Vehicle access from Allens Valley Road.

Christman Tract, mile 22.2

17 acres—Owner has agreed to sell on uphill (east) side of US Rote 30 where 2004 relocation crosses US Route 30.

No contract at time of this writing.

Mellott PATC Tract, mile 22.3

1.2 acres across from Christman Tract. Purchased in 2005.

McCusker PATC Tract, mile 22.4

5.5 acres between Mellott tract and Mountain House tavern at crest of US Route 30. Acquired in 2004 from owner of Mountain House tavern.

Power Line PATC Tract (Gothe), mile 22.5

Three acres under power lines and between McCusker tract, behind Mountain House tavern, and connecting to access road to Simonson tract. Acquired in 2003. Mr. Gothe said, “Hell no I won’t sell to you…I’ll give it to you.” Cost: $1.00 plus survey and deed registration.

Simonson PATC Tract, mile 22.6

Fulton County—6.15 acres purchased 1999 to protect trail. Includes portion of The Pulpit, a natural rock formation with prominent view. Vehicles access from US 30 at the Tuscarora Summit from unimproved road leading south between the Tuscarora Summit Inn and abandoned cabins.

State Game Lands #124

The Trail is within or near this Pennsylvania Game Land tract from mile 25.0 to mile 38.6.

The Trail is on roads from mile 38.6 to mile 42.2.

Indians Springs Wildlife Management Area

The Trail is within the WMA from mile 42.2 to mile 44.2.

The Trail is on roads from mile 44.2 to mile 48.

Chesapeake & Ohio Canal

The Trail is on the canal towpath within the Park from mile 48 to mile 55.9.

Ruth Morris Forest PATC Tract, mile 4.2

In Morgan County—this 129.09 acre is a deed of gift in 1983 from Ruth J. Morris to protect the trail. Adjoins Hauvermale Tract at south boundary. Includes stream in Dugan Hollow. Vehicles access on gated (key padlock) road from River Road located east of Tuscarora Trail.

Vos PATC Tract, mile 5.6

In Morgan County—67 acres purchased in 2004 to protect the trail. Adjoins the Ruth Morris Forest Tract at north boundary. Includes stream and Dugan Hollow Shelter. Vehicle access through Ruth Morris Forest Tract.

The Trail is unprotected or on roads from mile 5.7 to 9.6.

Spruce Pine Hollow County Park, mile 9.6

The Trail is within the park from mile 9.6 to mile 10.4.

Mellem PATC Tract, mile 10.4

In Morgan County—7.12 acres purchased in 1985 to protect trail by gaining legal access to private roads of the Spruce Pine Hollow Subdivision. Subdivision Lot 43. Adjoins the Spruce Pine Hollow County Park at north boundary. Vehicles access on private Spruce Pine Hollow Subdivision road from WVA 9.

Lutkins Passage PATC Tract, east of mile 11.1

In Morgan County—10.47 acres purchased in 1983 to protect trail between subdivision road and Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area (SCWMA). Subdivision Lot 10. Adjoins SCWMA at southwest boundary. Vehicle access through Spruce Pine Hollow Subdivision roads from WVA 9 (need 4-wheel drive in winter).

Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area (SCWMA), mile 11.9

The Trail is within the SCWMA from mile 11.9 to mile 31.8.

Shockeys Knob PATC Tract; mile 32.8

In Morgan County—70 acres purchased in 1996 to protect trail. Shockeys Knob Shelter on tract. Spring for shelter is north on private property. Adjoins SCWMA at east boundary. Vehicles access on right-of-way through gate (key padlock) off VA 671 at Shockeysville Church.

Brill PATC Easement, mile 33.5

In Frederick County-Deed of easement 100-foot wide from Mi33.5 to Mi36.0 following eastern property boundary.

The Trail is unprotected or on roads from mile 36.0 to 50.1.

Anderson & Smith PATC Easements, mile 50.1

In Frederick County-Deed of easement 25-foot wide from mi 50.1 to 51.4. Adjoins the Howze PATC Tract at south boundary.

Howze PATC Tract; mile 51.4

In Frederick County—23.4 acres purchased in 1982 to protect trail. Includes Barclays Run, the Howze campsite and spring. Adjoins the B. K. Haynes trail easement at east boundary. Vehicles access from US 50, VA 853 at Gore, Sinking Spring Road, and Barclay Run Lane.

B.K. Haynes Trail PATC Easement, mile 51.8

In Frederick County—Fifty (50)–foot wide easement from mile 52.4 to mile 58.4 following western boundaries of landowners of Phase 2 of the Great North Mountain Wilderness Area Subdivision. No vehicle access. Park vehicles at Howze or Biby tracts and walk to easement.

Biby Wilderness PATC Tract, mile 55.9

In Frederick County—20.02 acre deed of gift from Richard Biby in 2003 to provide legal access to the B. K. Haynes Trail Easement. B. K. Haynes 50-foot trail easement is at west boundary. Vehicles access from US 50 & VA 600 through Shawneeland via Tomahawk, Wolf Spring, and Timber Ridge trail roads.

Pinnacle PATC Tract, mile 57.6

In Frederick County—32.79 acre deed of gift from Tom Floyd in 1984 to protect the trail and construct a shelter. Adjoins the B. K. Haynes trail easement at east boundary and Tom Floyd deed of gift easement for protection of trail at northern half of western boundary. Vehicles access from US 50 & VA 704 and then private roads through North Mountain Estates and a 25-foot right-of-way through Tom Floyd’s property.

Pinnacle Camp/Frye Path PATC easement, mile 58.4

In Frederick County—12.26 acre deed of gift easement for protection of trail and campsite from Tom Floyd in 1978. Adjoins Pinnacle PATC tract at north boundary and Proctor Scenic Easement at south boundary. Vehicles access through North Mountain Estates.

Proctor Scenic Easement, mile 58.7

In Frederick County—Deed of Easement 100 feet wide conveyed by Rollin & Elva Larrick in 1977; property with easement subsequently sold to Proctor. Adjoins Larrick F-8 tract at west boundary. Larrick F-8 was purchased by PATC in 1976 to guarantee access to Pinnacle Tract. The Tuscarora Trail does not pass through the F-8 tract.

Larrick Hells Thicket PATC Tract, mile 59.2

In Frederick County—35.79 acres purchased from Elva Larrick in 1992 to protect the trail. Adjoins Proctor Scenic Easement at north boundary and the Larrick 43.3-acre tract at south boundary.

Larrick 43.3-acre PATC Tract, mile 59.6

In Frederick County—43.3 acres purchased from Rollin & Elva Larrick in 1977 to protect the trail. Includes Larrick Overlook. Adjoins the Hells Thicket Tract at north boundary, the Larrick Old Peach Orchard Tract at west boundary, and the Farmer–Lockhart Tract at south boundary. The Larrick Old Peach Orchard Tract, consisting of 179.12 acres, was purchased from Elva Larrick in 1992 to increase the trail buffer. The Tuscarora Trail does not pass through the Larrick Old Peach Orchard Tract.

Farmer–Lockhart PATC Tract, mile 60.8

In Hampshire County—40-acres purchased from Elva Larrick in 1999 to increase the trail corridor, previously restricted to a narrow easement. Adjoins the Larrick 43.3-acre, the Larrick Old Peach Orchard Tract, and the Lucas Woods Preserve tracts at the northern boundary. Vehicles access from VA US 50, VA 704, and WVA 23-11 (continuation of VA 704) to private right-of-way road where WVA 23-11 abruptly turns right, and then through the locked (combination lock) gate, following the gravel road (and trail blazes) to Lucas Woods.

Lucas Woods Preserve PATC–managed Tract, mile 61.5

In Frederick County—27.5 acres leased from the Nature Conservancy in 1977 for fifty years for trail protection and campsite. Adjoins Farmer-Lockhart Tract at south boundary.

The Trail is unprotected or on roads from mile 62.1 to 71.2.
