The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club designates the Tuscarora Trail as a public trail for foot use only on land owned by the Club and strongly recommends the designation of the Tuscarora Trail as a footpath in other areas, where possible. PATC adamantly opposes the use of motorized and mechanized vehicles on the Trail.
“Motorized vehicle” means any wheeled or tracked vehicle powered by an engine, and includes motorcycles, motor bikes, mopeds, off–road vehicles, all–terrain vehicles, snowmobiles, trucks, automobiles, etc.
Occasionally, motorized vehicles must access the Tuscarora Trail and Trail corridor lands for legitimate public purposes. PATC supports such access only as described below:
Motorized vehicles are permitted only on designated trails, which do not include the Tuscarora Trail.
The Bureau of Forestry regulates all motorized vehicle use on state forest land. Under §51.23 of its regulations, licensed motorized vehicles, properly registered snowmobiles, and all-terrain vehicles are allowed only on roads and trails designated for their specific use. Operating a motorized vehicle without a license or on undesignated roads and trails is unlawful and subject to fine and punishment.
The Bureau of State Parks regulates all motorized vehicle use in state recreation areas. Licensed motorized vehicles are allowed on park roads but are prohibited on all trails. However, snowmobiles are allowed on designated trails.
Licensed motorized vehicles are allowed on roads in the Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area (SCWMA) but are prohibited on all trails. All other motorized vehicles are prohibited from entering the management area.
