PATC Policy

The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club opposes the operation of all-terrain (mountain) bicycles on hiking trails designed for foot travel only. The use of mountain bicycles on foot trails is inconsistent with their purpose, and constitutes a serious safety hazard to hikers. Mountain bicycles damage trail surfaces, create ruts, displace trail improvements, and cause severe drainage problems as a result of erosion. As a volunteer organization, we lack the resources to contend with damage to hiking trails caused by mountain bicyclists. We urge them to use other trails more suited to their activity.

The only exceptions to this policy involve the use of bicycles along sections of public or private roads that are used by the Trail and the use of mountain bicycles by proper authorities who respond to emergencies along the Trail.

We request our affiliated governmental agencies, within their legal authority, to ban or discourage the use of mountain bicycles on hiking trails maintained by PATC, and to take all feasible measures to enforce their decisions on this matter.
